Contender status should be earned on the sheet: record, run environment, and the ability to survive a bad week.

Five checks that beat vibes

One: winning percentage against a meaningful games-played sample. Two: run differential that roughly agrees with the record. Three: at least one reliable starting-pitching spine. Four: a bullpen that is not already on fire. Five: enough positional depth to survive ordinary injury variance.

If a club fails three of the five, it may still be entertaining—but it is probably not a true contender yet.
