The simplest winning habit
On-base percentage credits hits, walks, and hit-by-pitches in the numerator of plate-appearance outcomes. It is the clearest widely published answer to “how often does this batter extend the inning?”
Pair OBP with slugging or OPS when you need power context, but do not skip OBP when evaluating leadoff hitters and lineup depth.

Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
- Does OBP include reach on error?
- No. Errors do not credit the batter with reaching safely in OBP.
- Is OBP more important than batting average?
